  1. Spanish settlers did not begin replacing indigenous indians until
  2. 1624.  The Portuguese arrived later, but Uruguay was attached to
  3. the Spanish Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata in the 18th Century. 
  4. Rebels fought against Spain beginning in 1810 until independence
  5. on August 25, 1825.  Liberal governments nationalized many
  6. industries and services.  Social welfare programs are very
  7. active.  Uruguay's standard of living is one of the highest in
  8. South America and political and labor conditions are amongst the
  9. freest.  Inflation and severe economic problems for more than
  10. twenty years have caused Uruguay to ask international creditors
  11. to restructure its $2.7 billion debt. In February 1973, President
  12. Juan Maria Bordaberry agreed to military control of his
  13. administration due to terrorist attacks.  Congress was abolished
  14. and a council of State was developed instead.  In 1976 a coup
  15. removed Bordaberry and civilian government was restored to the
  16. country in 1985.                    @
